Opioid Prescribing and Monitoring—Primary Care Models for Pain Management” was published in 2017. The 80-page primer, edited by Paul Christo, MD, Jeffrey Fudin, PharmD, Jeffrey Gudin, MD, and Bryn Nelson, PhD, addresses the CDC Guideline on Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain from a legal and legacy patient standpoint, and provides current assessment and drug monitoring tools, alternative therapies, and tapering protocols.

The first edition, published in 2016, focuses on “How to Combat Opioid Abuse and Misuse Responsibly.” The supplement provides an overview of the opioid crisis, combination therapies, and tools for managing both acute and chronic pain.

PPM's Opioid Conversion Calculator

One of the daily challenges facing healthcare providers is how to safely and accurately calculate appropriate opioid doses—either for opioid-naïve patients or when switching from one agent to another. Pain experts Michael J. Brennan, MD, MS, Jeffrey Fudin, BS, PharmD, FCCP, and Ruth J. Perkins, BS, MA, PharmD, BCPS took on the momentous task of developing their “ideal” opioid conversion calculator. Based on medical evidence with an easy-to-use framework at the point of care, the result is the PPM Opioid Calculator. There are approximately 1 million unique visitors to the esteemed conversion calculator annually.
